Google Earth

https://earth.google.com/web/

In the last year Google Earth has really outdone itself.  You can now run Google Earth on the Chrome Browser with out needing a download.  The updated Google Earth, has also added Voyager, a showcase of interactive, guided tours.  You can also uncover exciting new places with the "I'm feeling Lucky" button.  Google has created over 20,000 different places around the world that are worth exploring.  Once there, you can open up a new “Knowledge Card” that will offer more information and history about the place in question.  A few other features worth playing with are the 3-D view and street view.  My 10 year old son can not get enough of the street view. :-)
If you have not played with Google Earth in the past year, take a look.  I promise you will not be disappointed.
A fun place to start is, This Is Home.  This is a special voyager that takes you on a journey into traditional homes from cultures around the world.

Plickers For Formative Assessment

https://www.plickers.com/
I love this simple tool that uses QR Code technology in such a unique way.
Plickers is a powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices.
If you you are looking for a fast way to collect, organize and store formative data, then I suggest you try these.  You can assign each student their own plicker card or you can hand out random cards.  Assigning student's their own cards allows you to attach the data you are collecting to a student name.  My students love these cards and are always asking if we are going to use them today.
The best part about Plickers is that it is free and all you need is a computer attached to a projector and one tablet or smart phone.

Skype In the Classroom

An Engaging Lesson:
I had the opportunity to visit Alex Randel’s class today. (DV 5th Grade) His students were immersed in a conversation they were having with a woman who is currently living in the Ukraine.  This woman is Alex’s sister who talked to the kids and answered questions about life in the Ukraine.  This conversation happened via Skype, projected through his computer onto the big screen.  Wow!  What a great example of giving students 21st Century learning opportunities.
If you are interested in learning about using Skype in your classroom, check out the following web site http://education.skype.com/.
Skype in The Classroom
Meet new people, discover new cultures and connect with classes from around the world, all without leaving the classroom.

Spelling City

I was recently introduced to a great website called SpellingCity.  Today my daughter and I used it to practice her spelling words.  As we were going through some of the activities and games, it made me think how fun this would be on an interactive whiteboard (i.e. Mimio).  Whether you have access to an IWB or not it is definitely worth taking a look at. Make sure to go to the teacher resource page to find all the ways you can incorporate this website into your curriculum.  The table of contents includes activities for learning analogies, homophones, contractions, Dolch site words, math vocabulary and much, much more. Thank you Debra MacFarland for sharing this site!
